Conversion Formula

The conversion rests on the definition of the international mile: 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers exactly. A speed in kilometers per hour is therefore divided by 1.609344 to get miles per hour.

KM/H to MPH
mph = km/h × 0.621371

Since 1 kilometer = 0.621371 miles

Worked example
130 × 0.621371 = 80.78

So 130 km/h is about 81 mph

A quick mental shortcut: multiply the km/h figure by 6 and drop the last digit. 100 km/h → 600 → 60 mph, which is within 4% of the exact 62.14 mph.

Where KM/H and MPH Are Used

Kilometers per hour (km/h) is the road-speed unit in the vast majority of countries, including all of continental Europe, Canada, Australia, and most of Asia, Africa and South America.

Miles per hour (mph) remains the standard in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as a handful of smaller territories. Rental-car drivers and travelers crossing between these systems are the most frequent km/h to mph converters.
